In the News
Super Tuesday
After the miserable performance of pre-voting polls in New Hampshire, we can be sure both candidates were a bit nervous going into Super Tuesday. There was undeniably a huge swelling of support for Obama, putting into the "undecided" category many states that looked safe for Clinton. But in the end, her wins in California and Massachusetts undoubtedly left her campaign status as the front-runner still intact. On the other hand, Obama still has a lot to be happy about. In states that had caucuses, where the polling is least accurate, he ran the table, enabling him to win more states on Super Tuesday than Clinton. We can be sure that Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri has a smile on her face after Obama's narrow win in that bellweather state. And Obama won Connecticut and Delaware, two states that were in the Clinton column a week ago.
We can sum up by saying that:
Based on estimates from the Associated Press and both campaigns, the two candidates are likely to split the 1,681 Super Tuesday delegates at stake about evenly.
The Clinton campaign did well in the delegate count and her strength with the Latino and Asian groups, so they are in a good mood today.
Obama showed without a doubt that he is a national candidate, and likely the better hope of the Democratic Party for turning red states into blue states.

Here is what lies ahead. Obama has very favorable demographics in the rest of February. At the beginning of March, there is a stern test for both candidates in the delegate-rich states of Texas and Ohio. Hillary is leading in each by about 10%, but Obama will have generated momentum from the rest of February. The crystal ball is as murky as ever right now. After Texas and Ohio, we will know if Hillary has preserved her front-runner status or had the wind removed from her sails.
