In the News
OBAMA VICTORY IN SOUTH CAROLINA
Obama's victory in South Carolina was widely predicted, but the enormous size of it was unexpected. South Carolina Dems are about 48% black, and these folks went for Obama by about a 4 to 1 margin. (One should recall that a year ago, Hillary had a lead with those voters.) But Barack's victory trancended race, as he also won about 25% of the white vote, the remainder split fairly evenly between Edwards and Clinton. This fact was vitally important in Obama's efforts to portray himself as a candidate who represents all of the people in America.
Super Tuesday, Feb 5, where a huge number of delegates will be decided, is the next step in the race. It looks pretty clear now that this predicted date marking who will get the nomination is a far cry from the real finale, which is now at some point far in the distant future. True, Hillary has a huge lead in her home state of New York, but fortunately for Obama, that contest is not winner take all. Both the top candidates are going to have something to crow about at the conclusion of Super Tuesday.
There are some big questions that may be answered soon. One of them is whether John Edwards will stay in the race, since there is a good chance he will be shut out once again. He has vowed to stay in to the end, but will he? Maybe. He still will have some delegates in states like NY that are not winner take all. If the race between Obama and Clinton stays very close--a distinct possibility--Edwards is a factor far beyond the number of his supporters. If John Edwards drops out of the race, no one seems to know for sure which candidate will benefit the most. This is a sign that neither candidate would receive a huge pickup from the race becoming heads-up.
Another question is who will get the Republican nomination, and how that will affect the Democratic race. It is looking like the candidacy of Rudy Giuliani may go down the tubes, with McCain and Romney becoming the two front-runners. Florida and Super Tuesday will determine this. Look for the Republican field to shrink from five to three during February. I think it is fair to say that if McCain comes out on top, there will be an increasing Dem cry for an Obama candidacy, because McCain and Obama have the biggest support from independent voters.
I can safely say that in my lifetime--which goes back to FDR--these are the most exciting primary races for president on both sides of the aisle that I have ever seen! No other year even comes close; we live in an exciting and critical time.
