Governor Snyder's budget
Dear Saginaw County Democrats, I’m sure by now you’ve read the news about the budget proposal Governor Snyder has unveiled. A budget that would give businesses a $1.8 billion tax break at the expense of Michigan’s economy and workforce. While Governor Snyder had repeatedly pledged to “move all of Michigan forward”, a pledge I strongly agreed with, this budget picks out who he’s willing to leave behind. The Governor’s budget would do the following: -Raise taxes on ALL public and private pensions that retirees and seniors receive. -Cut $470 per pupil from education funding for K-12 schools. -Slash $222 million (15%) from higher education funding for colleges and universities. -Cut ALL statutory revenue sharing for cities, villages and townships that fund police officers and fire fighters in our neighborhoods. State revenue sharing payments to counties will also be cut by $51.8 million. -Eliminate the Michigan Earned Income Tax Credit, which helps working families who are struggling to get by. Last year, 19,610 residents filed for the Michigan EITC in Saginaw County, returning $8,469,992 back to our local economy. -Lay off 300 Department of Human Services field workers who manage our child welfare, foster care and other social welfare programs. The average caseworker already handles more than 700 cases, more than double the number in 2002. I fully agree with the Governor that Michigan’s budget needs a serious overhaul, but I don’t need a study or complicated metrics to tell me that slashing education, eliminating those who protect our most vulnerable children, and plunging an additional 14,000 kids into poverty is NOT the right thing to do for Michigan. As a lifelong Michigander and mother of two, I understand the importance of good paying jobs, quality schools, and programs to help protect our most vulnerable citizens. As the State Senate Democratic Leader I will continue to fight for policies that build a strong future for Michigan and I encourage you to share your ideas on how we can get our State back on track. Thank you, and please check out our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/MichiganSenateDemocrats and join the conversation there. Gretchen Whitmer Senate Democratic Leader
