Debbie Stabenow
US Senator
Federal
Statement "What is happening to Michigan's economy is threatening our entire middle class way of life. We must stop corporations from breaking their promises to workers who have paid into their pensions their whole life. We must reduce health care costs and invest in education and innovation to give our children opportunities to compete. And we must get tough on countries like China and Japan who are violating our trade laws. With a level playing field, Michigan can compete with any country in the world!"

Proposals What she has already done:
*Passed a $2 billion tax cut for manufacturers who create jobs in the U.S. rather than outsourcing jobs overseas.
*Stopped the Bush Administration's effort to double prescription drug co-pays for 39,739 Michigan veterans.
*Reduced our dependence on foreign oil by successfully passing tax incentives to develop alternative fuels, including ethanol from Michigan crops.
*Negotiated an agreement with the Canadian province of Ontario to end by 2010 the shipping of Toronto municipal trash to Michigan landfills.
*Mobilized thousands of citizens in the fight to stop the dumping of Canadian trash in Michigan, and passed laws to put high-tech equipment at the border to inspect the trucks and make Canada pay for truck inspections.
*Authored the first ever federal ban on drilling for oil and gas in our Great Lakes.
*Increased Michigan's fair share of funding for roads and bridges by $239 million, bringing 61,500 new jobs to the state.
